I don't remember the first time I saw her run up to me with a flower in her hand and say, "Howdy," like she was some sort of lone ranger. That was the way we introduced ourselves back then, before someone took the South and made it like everywhere else.
Maybe what she meant when she said, "Howdy," was, "Aren't you glad we're still children and don't have to worry about all the nonsense in the grownup world?"
I don't remember the first time she said, "Howdy," but I wish I did. I would smile and tell her, "Howdy," back.
